SUMMARY:'Gut\, Liver and Friends' Seminar with Paul Wilmes
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 13.12.2023 at 12:30\, Paul Wilmes will be the speaker of our ‘Gut\, Liver and Friends‘ seminar. \nPaul Wilmes is Professor of Systems Ecology and holds appointments at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine and in the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine within the Faculty of Science\, Technology and Medicine of the University of Luxembourg. He heads the Systems Ecology Research Group. \nHis main research focus is on using Systems Biology approaches for unraveling fundamental ecological relationships within and between microbial populations in situ. The group has pioneered the development of appropriate wet- and dry-lab methodologies for performing systematic molecular measurements of microbial consortia over space and time. This allows for example to define lifestyle strategies of distinct populations and link these to genetic and functional traits. The same approaches are allowing the study of microbiome-host molecular interactions. In this context\, his group has developed a microfluidics-based in vitro model of the human-microbial gastrointestinal interface called HuMiX.

SUMMARY:'Gut\, Liver and Friends' Seminar with Tim Rollenske
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 20.09.2023 at 12:30\, Tim Rollenske will be the speaker of our ‘Gut\, Liver and Friends‘ seminar. \nProf. Dr. Tim Rollenske is Junior Professor and Group Leader at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Experimental Immunology at the Medical Faculty of Bonn University. \nThe Rollenske Lab is interested in how B cells and their antibodies control the diverse commensal microorganisms that are present at mucosal surfaces and protect from infection by pathogens at mucosal sites. \n\n\n\n\nWe use human samples and germ-free or gnotobiotic mouse models that possess a microbiota with defined composition of bacterial strains. These reductionist models allow us to address our questions at mechanistic and molecular detail. We pair those models with single cell B cell receptor repertoire analysis and monoclonal antibody testing to functionally define how the humoral immune system contributes to a mutualistic host-microbe relationship. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe title of the talk is: ‘Targets of intestinal IgA’.

SUMMARY:'Gut\, Liver and Friends' Seminar with Marie-Claire Arrieta
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 03.05.2023 at 3:30 pm\, Marie-Claire Arrieta will be the speaker of our next ‘Gut\, Liver and Friends‘ seminar. \nMarie-Claire Arrieta is Associate Professor at the Departments of Physiology & Pharmacology\, and Paediatrics at the University of Calgary\, Canada. \nThe Arrieta Lab (Welcome to the Arrieta lab) investigates the development of early-life microbiome and the role of microbes mucins in defining aspects of host immune and metabolic development. \n\nMicrobiologists have known for quite some time that we encounter microbes everywhere\, all the time\, and that often includes fecal microbes too. For 200 years\, since germs were first associated with infectious diseases\, we have all learned to fear and get rid of them. But it is until very recently that we begin to understand how important microbes are for our health\, especially when we are children. As part of the International Microbiome Center at the Cumming School of Medicine\, University of Calgary\, our lab is deciphering how humans begin their life in the company of trillions of microbes — how our early-life microbiome develop\, and how these microbes help define important aspects of immune and metabolic development. \nOur lab tackles these complex questions by combining next generation microbiome sequencing data with metabolic and immune studies in both humans and animal models of diseases\, such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease.

SUMMARY:'Gut\, Liver and Friends' Seminar with Philip Ahern
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 08.03.2023 at 3:30 pm\, Dr. phil. Philip Ahern will be the speaker of our next ‘Gut\, Liver and Friends‘ seminar. \nPhilip Ahern is Research Assistant at the Lerner Research Institute\, Cleveland\, Ohio\, USA.  \nThe research interests of his group are: \n“Research in our group focuses on understanding how homeostasis between the intestinal immune system and the gut microbiota is established and maintained\, and how disruption of this relationship leads to the development and exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).” \nOur gut microbiota\, the vast collection of harmless and beneficial microbes and viruses that inhabit our intestines\, are key contributors to host health. IBD\, encompassing Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC)\, represent a set of severe inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract that result from inflammatory immune responses directed against members of the gut microbiota. A variety of immune cell types\, from both the innate and adaptive immune compartments\, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD. Our work is aimed at further increasing our understanding of the dynamic interplay between intestinal CD4+ T cells and the gut microbiota during the development of intestinal inflammation\, and how the gut microbiota can be targeted to treat IBD and restore host health. \nOur overarching goal is to identify host and microbial pathways that can be targeted to facilitate the development of new and improved therapeutic strategies for the treatment of IBD.” \nThe title of his presentation is: \n\n     ”Decoding microbiome interactions with the immune system”
