13th Meeting of the European Mucosal Immunology Group

Discussing Immunology at RWTH Aachen University

The European Mucosal Immunology Group, EMIG for short, is a network of European scientists researching immune responses on mucosal surfaces, such as the digestive tract, the respiratory tract, and the urogenital tract.

The biennial EMIG meeting is a highlight where the latest findings are openly presented and discussed, and where networks for collaboration are established and strengthened.

After the EMIG 2023 in Bern, it was up to Mathias Hornef (projects B01 and head of the CRC´s graduate school) and Oliver Pabst, (spokesperson of this CRC and project B06) to organize the 13th EMIG meeting in Aachen in 2025. From 21st to 23rd of July more than 150 scientists from all over the world gathered at the Center for Teaching and Training, CT², at RWTH Aachen University.

At EMIG 2025, a wide range of aspects of mucosal immunity were discussed, such as the development of mucosal immunity in the neonatal organism, host-pathogen interactions, and the role of the microbiome or the regulation of inflammatory processes and tissue repair.

An entire plenary session was dedicated to Young Immunologists. Thanks to Asmae Laouina and Eva-Lena Stange, both PhD students from our CRC, for their excellent chairing of this session! Another session explored the Gut-Liver Axis. Here, Adrien Guillot, Co-PI of project B05 of our CRC,  presented findings on the role of epithelial cells in the bile duct in liver injuries and regeneration. Ana Izcue, Co-PI of project B08, gave a lecture on xx.

In addition to a full dose of science, we also offered our guests plenty of Printen and a city tour to get to know Aachen from all perspectives.

The informal nature and relaxed atmosphere of the EMIG 2025, and extensive discussions after the talks and at the posters gave early-career scientists and experienced experts a wide range of opportunities to exchange results, concepts, and ideas.

See you in Prague – The next EMIG meeting will take place in Prague in the summer of 2027.
