The workshop is divided into two parts: There is an online Moodle course, which has to be worked through by the participants themselves beforehand. The second part is this online seminar in which questions from the Moodle course are addressed and various points regarding research data management in medicine are discussed and practiced in detail.

Research data management is based on the life cycle of research data, which comprises various steps. These range from the application and planning phase as well as the collection of research data, the selection of data to be retained, their storage and publication, to securing access and use. Overarching tasks along this life cycle include questions about the costs of storage and conservation measures and who bears them, which metadata must be created in order to search for and describe them, or how to make the data permanently findable and citable by means of persistent identifiers.

Special framework conditions for research data management in medicine are, for example, the enormous amounts of data that accumulate for archiving or publication, which is mainly due to the large number of imaging procedures or data from gene sequencing. Another special feature is the legal framework in medicine with regard to data protection and the personal rights of patients.

In addition to an introduction to research data management, the event will show support possibilities for researchers from the Research Data Competence Center of RWTH Aachen University and the ZB MED.
